Description

To use the time you have with your students effectively, it is important to begin by mapping out your lesson and learning objectives to ensure you have created an effective path for students to meet objectives. In this workshop, participants will identify the fundamental characteristics of a lesson plan and the benefits of using lesson planning in their teaching practice. Participants will begin to construct lesson plans to use in their instructional opportunities or may choose to create a lesson plan for an aspirational lesson on a topic of interest. Lesson plans are a wonderful resource to include in a teaching dossier to showcase your teaching philosophies in practice and to document the evolution of your teaching over time. This workshop is open to all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, it is a requirement for completion of the University Teaching Foundations (UTF) Certificate, and also supports the ASPIRE program.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognize the benefits associated with planning for your classes, labs, and tutorials
  • Identify the fundamental components of an effective lesson plan
  • Define learning outcomes and describe the characteristics of a high quality learning outcome
  • Practice writing learning outcomes relevant to your discipline
  • Relate learning outcomes to teaching approaches and student activities in the classroom
  • Develop a lesson plan relevant to your practice
